Service Overview

We build cross platform desktop applications for the cases where a browser tab is genuinely not enough: software that needs local file system access, works offline for long stretches, talks to hardware, runs in the background, or has to handle datasets too large to push through a browser. Most of our desktop work uses Electron or Tauri with a React frontend, which lets us share code and design language with an existing web product while still shipping signed, auto updating installers for Windows, macOS, and Linux. We treat the parts that separate a real desktop app from a wrapped website as first class work: native menus and keyboard shortcuts, correct window and multi monitor behaviour, OS notifications, secure local storage, code signing and notarization, crash reporting, and an auto update channel you can roll back. Where the workload is heavy or latency sensitive we use Tauri with a Rust core to keep memory and startup cost down.

Key Features

  • Cross platform apps for Windows, macOS, and Linux from one codebase
  • Electron and Tauri architectures chosen to fit the workload
  • React and TypeScript frontends shared with your existing web product
  • Offline first data layer with local storage and background sync
  • Local file system, USB, serial, and peripheral hardware integration
  • Native menus, keyboard shortcuts, and system tray behaviour
  • OS level notifications and background task scheduling
  • Secure credential storage using the platform keychain
  • Code signing and Apple notarization for trusted installation
  • Auto update channels with staged rollout and rollback
  • Crash reporting and usage telemetry with user consent
  • Installer and packaging pipelines wired into CI
  • Multi monitor, high DPI, and window state handling
  • Performance profiling for startup time and memory footprint

Our Delivery Process

We use an agile, transparent process to ensure your project is completed on time and meets exactly your needs.

01

Requirements and platform choice

Establish what the app must do natively, then choose Electron or Tauri based on workload, footprint, and team skills.

3-5 days
02

Architecture and offline model

Design the local data layer, sync strategy, conflict resolution, and the boundary between the native and web layers.

1 week
03

Core development

Build the application surface, native integrations, and background processing in reviewable increments.

3-8 weeks
04

Packaging and signing

Set up installers, code signing, Apple notarization, and the auto update channel with a rollback path.

1 week
05

Cross platform testing

Verify behaviour on each target OS including permissions, multi monitor setups, and upgrade from previous versions.

1-2 weeks
06

Release and handover

Ship the first public build, wire up crash reporting, and hand over signing credentials and build documentation.

3-5 days
Why Us

Why Choose SoftwareCrafting?

  • One codebase covering all three desktop platforms
  • Shared components and design language with your web application
  • Genuinely usable offline, not just a cached web page
  • Direct access to files, hardware, and OS features the browser blocks
  • Signed and notarized builds that install without security warnings
  • Auto updates you control, including the ability to roll back a bad release
  • Crash reports that tell you what broke on a machine you cannot access
  • Startup time and memory footprint treated as requirements, not accidents
  • Release pipeline in CI so shipping an update is routine
  • Documented build and signing process handed over to your team
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I build a desktop app or just a web app?

Build desktop when you need local file access, sustained offline use, hardware integration, background processing while the app is closed, or datasets too large for a browser. If none of those apply, a well built web application is cheaper to develop, deploy, and support. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your product falls on.

Electron or Tauri, and does it matter?

It matters for footprint. Electron bundles Chromium, which means a larger installer and higher memory use, but it has the deepest ecosystem and the most predictable rendering. Tauri uses the operating system web view with a Rust core, so installers are far smaller and memory use is lower, at the cost of rendering differences between platforms. We pick based on your workload and whether your team can maintain Rust.

Can it reuse our existing React web app?

Usually a large portion of it. Shared components, design system, and business logic move across well. What has to be rebuilt is anything assuming a browser: routing, storage, authentication, and any feature that should behave natively on the desktop such as menus, shortcuts, and file dialogs.

How do updates reach users?

Through a built in auto update channel. The app checks a release feed, downloads in the background, and applies the update on restart. We set up staged rollout so a release reaches a small percentage first, and a rollback path so a bad build can be pulled before it reaches everyone.

Do you handle code signing and notarization?

Yes, and it is not optional in practice. Unsigned applications trigger security warnings on both Windows and macOS that stop most users from installing. We set up signing certificates, Apple notarization, and the CI pipeline that signs every release automatically, then hand the credentials and process over to you.

What about offline data and syncing?

We design the local data layer first, usually SQLite for structured data, then define the sync protocol and, critically, the conflict resolution rules for when the same record changed in two places. Getting those rules explicit up front is what separates an app that works offline from one that quietly loses user data.
